About Us

A Brief Description of the Program
To ensure that seniors, regardless of their economic situation, have an opportunity to enjoy a comfortable, secure living environment, Community Housing was formed.

In 1986, working through the federal government's Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Section 202 Program, Community Housing opened its first affordable senior housing facility (Ross Knotts Retirement Center was the first). Today, 22 additional facilities have been approved throughout Oregon, California, and Texas. Community Housing currently operates 24 subsidized facilities throughout Oregon, California, and Texas, and additional facilities are in development or under construction. Community Housing is now one of the leading providers of senior affordable housing in the State of Oregon.

Community Housing by Pacific Retirement Services also manages Glenridge Terrace, a multi-family affordable housing apartment complex in Medford. This HUD-sponsored facility does have income requirements, but no age requirements. There are seniors living at Glenridge, some of whom live with their grandchildren. Glenridge Terrace also houses a Computer Learning Center (CLC), which won the 1999 Community Service to Youth at Risk Award, which is presented by the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA). Several senior volunteers from the Foster Grandparent Program work in the CLC, helping children with their schoolwork.

Facts-at-a-Glance:

  • Applicant (or applicant's spouse) must be 62 years of age or older (with the exception of Glenridge Terrace, Ross Knotts, and Donald E. Lewis).
  • Applicant(s) must make less than the income limits set by HUD.
  • Applicant(s) must meet posted criteria stated on Tenant Selection Plan.
  • Rent and utilities are based on 30% of a person's adjusted gross income (gross income minus all medically related expenses).
  • Average apartment size is 520 square feet; all apartments feature a living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, storage closets, and an emergency pull-cord system.
  • Most facilities are equipped with an elevator, community room, laundry facilities, and in-house mail delivery.
  • All facilities comply with federal fair housing regulations, accepting age-qualified residents without regard to race, color, religion, disability, familiar status, national origin, or gender.
  • Interpretive services may be scheduled upon request.

Mission Statement:
To provide cost-effective, quality housing with programs to meet the physical, medical, and social needs for the elderly and families. To maintain a positive environment for personal growth and fulfillment for low-income seniors and families, and strive continuously to meet the challenge of fostering a comprehensive community lifestyle which recognizes an individual's need for dignity and self-esteem.
